Never Get Lost for Long is pianist Ali Berkok's first solo recording. A veteran of the Toronto jazz scene, this solo debut knits together Berkok's twin interests in the standard jazz repertoire and free improvisation, with each approach getting intensive investigation across 12 tracks. Building on his past work in the jazz quintet Arkana Music, the minimalist prog group Muskox, and the electro-acoustic improvising quartet Aurochs, Berkok brings a fresh perspective to a well-worn jazz performance tradition. The stylistic twists and turns on this recording are tied together by a keen interest in pulse and rhythm; Berkok's studies on the subject of rhythmic manipulation in the jazz tradition manifest in the sense of steady propulsion that courses through these pieces.
